Deep Space Nine Pilot, Emmisary

Command Benjamin Sisko, is handed over administration of the key former mining Station Deep Space Nine (Terok Nor). He is mindful to give it up; Picard, whom is responsible for transferring him wants to know if he is up to the job and gives him an ear full ... the point being that Locutus the PR face of the Borg when the ship he served on was at Wolf 359 (Best of Both Worlds Part 2), and that Sisko cannot forgive Picard the death of his wife Jennifer. When the wormhole is discovered, he orders (O'Brien) to have DS9 moved towards the mouth of the wormhole.

He find that the aliens in the Bajoran Wormhole (whom the Bajoran's regard as prophets) simply exist, and have no concept of linear time. When attempting to communicate with him, they keep on covering the events of Wolf 359, because he is mentally stuck "you exist here". Sisko finds out that he has a mission and "is of Bajor", and the Emissary for the Bajorans.

This gives him a sense of purpose, so when Picard comes back to take him away, after Jean Luc reads him the riot act for wasting their time, he takes this purpose and tells Picard what to go do with himself, that he and Jake are staying. By putting the pressure on Sisko, Picard and the "Prophets" get Sisko out of his rut, and a renewed sense of purpose to get on with his life.

The events which they shared affected both, but a common bond, which manifests itself by a strange Love/Hate relationship built up, whereby each propped up the other. It was the loss of life to the Borg, which allowed Picard to assert himself over his Borg implants (with Data's help). Thus it could be said that Sisko's life was stagnant, in limbo, and thus was saved by Picard, but I do not know a situation where the reverse happened.

I do believe, but am not sure that the ship Sisko served on at Wolf 359 was the Melbourne, which Riker was expected to be Captain of, before the chase and cat and mouse game in Best of Both Worlds Part 1.
